Edward Wilmot Blyden

1832 – 1912

The father of Pan-Africanism

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Liberia Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Educator, writer and diplomat whose work on African identity and self-rule laid the intellectual ground for Pan-Africanism decades before the term existed.

Edward Wilmot Blyden was an Americo-Liberian educator, writer, diplomat and politician active across West Africa.

He served as the seventh Secretary of State of Liberia from 1864 to 1865, and his writing on African civilisation and identity influenced generations of Pan-Africanist thought.
